The Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand’s premier tourist destinations, offering outstanding beaches, water sports, and wonderful local attractions, enjoyed by kiwis and thousands of inbound tourists alike. On a headland between Hahei and Cooks Beach you’ll find a ‘must visit’ local attraction, Cathedral Cove Macadamia Orchard, a commercially operated orchard since 2001. This summer the orchard has been extensively developed into a ‘sustainable eco - tourism destination’ with something for all age groups.
On site you’ll find a mobile café, enjoy fair-trade organic tea, coffee or cold drinks while you walk among the aromatic Nut trees, taking in the glorious views and the ever present warm sunshine. The sub tropical micro climate has enabled the commercial plantings of Macadamia trees, citrus trees, plus a great variety of native trees. There is also prolific Native bird life including Tui, Bell Bird & Kaka along with wild Turkeys, Quail, Peacocks, Pheasants, and Hawks. For those interested in the way the nuts are grown and harvested, there is a short film, or you can join in the orchard tour with one of the staff, who can hopefully answer any questions you or your children have!
At the orchard shop you can stock up the bach or campsite pantry with a healthy choice of locally grown seasonal and organic fruit and vegetables , fresh organic eggs, local seafood, plus a delicious range of Cathedral Cove Macadamia products, including natural nuts, dark chocolate coated macadamias, macadamia dukkah, museli, lemon kelp sprinkle (for coating & marinating local seafood such as scallops) and the very healthy macadamia nut oil, rich in omega 3 & 6 fatty acids and ideal for cooking locally caught fish, due to its very high smoke point and low cholesterol.
During summer, subject to availability, Walnut Cottage (a three bedroom lockwood, sleeping up to five) is available to rent, perfect for a family holiday or romantic getaway. With all bookings comes a complimentary selection of orchard produce and Macadamia products.
Close by are two world famous beaches, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The township of Whitianga is a short drive away and historic Coromandel town is sixty minutes drive over the scenic Coromandel ranges. All this sensuous splendor, is just 2 hours drive from Auckland.
